Video magnifiers offer patients a step beyond traditional handheld magnifiers in addition to the portability feature. These devices are available in the size approximately of cell phone and often have an additional lighting system. The size of the image can be increased and decreased as needed for patients if they want to read prices, maps, labels, and prescriptions. Some of these magnifiers also come with a stand allowing patients to eliminate the fatigue that comes with holding the magnifier.
Some eye diseases result in decreased contrast sensitivity. This can make reading newspapers or other materials in non-optimal lighting conditions a difficult task. Adjustable brightness can help increase contrast in some situations. Another benefit patients can appreciate beyond the traditional magnifier is the ability to digitally enhance print contrast (like the above picture) by using inverse colors or changing the font color.
Those with low vision and reduced hand dexterity may appreciate the “screen-capture” mode offered by some electronic magnifiers. This feature allows a patient to manipulate “still” images. With some supplement cables, these images can also be uploaded onto a computer. Similarly, some magnifiers offer the ability for the handheld device to be hooked up to a monitor or television which allows patient access to a magnified live video.
Other practical considerations may include:
- Magnification ability
- Screen size (larger screen sizes may impact weight and portability)
- Easy to use tactile buttons
- Battery Life
- Warranty
- Cost
Remember, despite the many features of an electronic magnifier, it may not be a one-device-fits-all. There are many low vision devices out in the market and some devices may work better for certain tasks than others. The best approach is to come up with a specific list of activities that you would like help achieving, let a low vision specialist show you the available options, and try the device out in office.
