Low Vision is having visual impairment that cannot be corrected by glasses, surgery or medication. The most common causes of low vision include: age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. Ocular albinism, retinitis pigmentosa, and other retinopathies are ocular conditions that our team frequently manages.

Many of these eye conditions or diseases are from damage to the fine structures to either the front or the back of the eye (cornea, retina, optic nerve).

Visual symptoms from low vision can include:
  • Reduced visual acuity
  • Blurry or Missing Visual field (central or peripheral)
  • Visual Distortion
  • Light sensitivity or Difficulty adjusting to different lighting
  • Difficulties telling colors apart
  • Low vision can increase falls risk in older patients

Although we cannot fix the quality of the vision, a low vision assessment can offer tools, aids, or rehabilitation training to teach patients new strategies so that they can continue to be independent and enjoy activities of daily living (ADLs) such as reading, crafts, and sometimes even driving.

We recommend that all our patients to continue follow-up care with their existing eyecare providers to ensure their eye health or condition remains medically stable for the long term.
