Solar Eclipse 2017 is on Its Way

A full solar eclipse which can be seen by most of North America will be happening Monday August 21, 2017.  During this time, the moon cross paths such that it  blocks out the sun. Nashville will be in the path of totality where viewers will be able to see the moon completely block the sun unlike in other parts of North America where a partial shadow block will occur. The music city will get to enjoy this spectacular show at 1:25pm CST with totality lasting close to 2 minutes if the weather cooperates.
Remember that it is not safe to look directly at the sun during a solar eclipse. The sun’s radiation can damage the retina at the back of the eye.
To safely view the eclipse, you can use the following:
  • Special Eclipse Eyewear. Make sure they are certified to meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard for safe direct viewing of the Sun. Also make sure there are no cracks or scratches or other damage to the filters, else do not use them.
  • Pinhole Projection by passing the sunlight through a small aperture (you can even use your hands with your fingers intertwined) which allows the image to fall on a surface. Else a fun DIY (Make your own Eclipse Viewer for <$20)
  • Optical Projection using telescopes or binoculars. This method would still require special filters to be fitted on the device since the rays can damage the instrument.
